Dealing with a Bromance

What is a Bromance? Take two friends (brothers = Bro) who hang out together so often that they might as well be in a relationship (romance = mance), put them together and you have a Bromance. A Bromance is a non-sexual relationship between two men who are extremely good friends.

Why would a Bromance matter to you? Well, if you’re a woman who is the third wheel in a Bromance, the whole experience can be rather frustrating. Sometimes Bromances are so intimate that you can’t help but wonder what is really going on. And even if they aren’t that serious, a Bromance can leave your contemplating who your boyfriend cares about more. Every woman wants to feel like they are the true love and soulmate in their man’s life, but all of that goes out the door with a Bromance. Sometimes you’re the one left hanging and it becomes clear that your man’s bro comes before his woman.

In the most serious cases, Bromances can seem like homosexual relationships to the casual observer. Some friends express their feelings openly by hugging, sharing intimate thoughts, and even holding hands. Maybe it’s how people are raised in society to perceive “manhood”, but many Bromances seem to fly in the face of traditional standards. And yet they do have strong links in history and male behaviour. After all, the idea of “best friends who stand together no matter what” serves as the basis for many classic stories that have been translated for movies and TV. Maybe it’s a good sign that two men are more able to openly express their love and friendship for each other in today’s times. People who aren’t used to such openness get flustered, while people who have no issue simply label the situation as a Bromance and move on. No big deal. Unless you’re the girlfriend in the situation.

If your boyfriend’s Bromance bothers you, you should seriously consider what is going on. Who’s problem is it really? Because one thing should be clear – Bromances don’t actually involve the two friends being in a sexual relationship. If you are worried about this, then you’ll have to do some serious soul searching because something else might be signalling that your boyfriend isn’t straight. Of course most girlfriends who are frustrated with their boyfriends Bromances are not jealous of the “other guy” as romantic competition; however, they are certainly competitors for time and attention. You’ll have to take some things into consideration such as:

1. Who came first, you or his friend?
2. How much time do they spend together?
3. Are you convinced his friend matters more than you?
4. Who would he choose if it came down to it?
5. Do you get along with his friend?

There are certain things you should put up with if you love your boyfriend, and other things that you don’t have to take if you are in a healthy relationship. So you have to weigh out the situation and determine who is getting the short end of the stick. Don’t try to manipulate your boyfriend or force him to choose just yet or else you will just make things worse. If you come to the decision that your boyfriend’s Bromance is ultimately not fair to you, then state your case as completely as possible. Just remember, in most cases it’s great that your boyfriend has such a close friend. And as your own relationship develops, you will both want to keep separate and healthy social lives so that you don’t encompass absolutely everything about each other in your relationship. There are things that a guy just can’t talk to his girlfriend about and that where a good friend comes in. If you are clearly the number one true love and soulmate in his life then consider yourself lucky that he is emotionally mature enough to balance a girlfriend and a close male friend.
