Stop Snoring Solutions and How to Live with a Snorer

When you finally find your one true soulmate, you imagine a happy life together. You may picture a grand house, a fancy wedding, and even a few children. No one ever fantasizes about the real and practical aspects of living with another person. It takes enough effort just to research online dating tips and relationship advice and find someone in the first place. And usually when you first fall in love, the last thing that comes to mind is that your perfect partner snores like an elephant.
It can be a quite shocking experience to realize that your bed mate is a loud snorer. No one ever tells you that they snore on a first date. But when that sound of uncontrolled air hitting the back of someone’s throat fills the air, it is unmistakable. Only then do realize that your perfect mate makes noise like a wild forest animal. In worst case scenarios, snoring can leave the other person awake at night wondering when there might be relief from the noise. It can also breakup a night of sleep into segments where the non-snorer drifts in and out of sleep but never reaches of fully relaxed state. The next morning can be an exercise in stress and frustration as the snorer is fully rested, but the other person feels like taking a nap.

If you are person who lives with a snorer, here are some things you can try to make the situation better.

1. The first thing you should do is to tell your partner that they snore. They probably already know, but there are some cases where a snorer might not have a clue as to their actions. Tell the snorer about the problem in the most sensitive way possible so that you do not embarrass them. Once the lines of communication are open, then you can work together to research a suitable solution. On rare occasions you might run into a person who simply is in denial about their snoring. This can be easily solved by recording the noise at night and playing it back to the snorer.

2. Remember that snoring will not be a problem for you if you cannot hear it yourself. A simple pair of ear plugs can go a long way towards getting a good night of sleep. While they might not be able to drown out all of the noise (especially if the snorer is right beside you) they can certainly make a positive impact. It also helps to fall asleep before the snorer does, and this in combination with your plugs can make sure that you are already sound asleep before snoring even enters the equation.

3. It helps to have a little bit of distance between you and the snorer. This might prevent you from being able to cuddle throughout the night, but facing away from the snorer can help. You can also invest in a larger mattress so that there’s more room between you and the snorer.

4. This next suggestion is a little bit controversial – especially when it comes to new couples. But sleeping in separate beds is becoming more popular among people. This will give you an added degree of privacy and you will not be subject to the tossing and turning of your partner at night. The distance between beds can also help with the problem of snoring, particularly if you use earplugs as well. Some couples have even found that this sleeping arrangement makes their relationship stronger. After all, there is no rule that says you have to sleep and snuggle with your partner throughout the night. Getting a good night’s sleep and waking up feeling refreshed is important for staying healthy.

5. There are several things that the snorer can do two quell the noise as well. For one, they can try sleeping on their side at night. There are even devices that will prevent a snorer from lying flat on their back. While you probably don’t have to go that route, encourage the snorer to sleep on their side and give them a little bit of help (or push) if you find them rolling onto their backs.

A snorer should also avoid excess alcohol or using tranquilizers. These substances will relax muscles to the point where snoring will be uncontrollably loud.

There are many stop snoring aids on the market that can help with light to moderate snoring. These include nasal strips, and throat sprays, and various contraptions that will hold a snorers mouth in a particular position. If you find the situation is bad enough that you are considering these steps, it would probably be best to visit a doctor first. There is always the threat of an underlying condition that might be causing your snoring, or the snoring itself can be an indication of something that needs immediate medical attention. Sometimes losing weight can also help with snoring, and if this is the case then talking to a doctor about an appropriate exercise plan is a good idea.

Whatever course of action you and the snorer choose to take, it is important to have a positive attitude. Look at the situation with a certain degree of humour, and try to work together to solve the problem. The worst thing you can do is to try to ignore the situation and live with the sound of snoring. If it is interrupting your sleep it will surely catch up to you and potentially affect you physically and emotionally. And never forget about the value of a good old-fashioned kick in the rear end when the snoring gets too loud!
